가곡과 시조창의 노랫말 공유 경위 가설 －<중대엽>의 ‘시조계 시형 채용’과 <시절가>의 ‘가곡 노랫말 차용’－
오늘날 가곡과 시조창은 흔히 ‘시조시’라 부르는 노랫말을 폭넓게 공유하지만, 역사적으로 언제나 그랬 던 것은 아니다. 이 글은 기원과 음악형식을 달리하는 가곡과 시조창이 노랫말을 공유하게 된 과정을, 1600년 무렵의 악보부터 출발하여 두 단계의 가설로써 설명하려는 시도이다. 첫 번째 가설은, 1600년 전후하여 가곡의 전신인 <중대엽>의 노랫말에 이른바 ‘부분엮음’ 현상이 일어 나, 대엽류의 노랫말이 시조계 노랫말과 같은 12음보가 되었으리라는 것이다. 이로써 대엽류가 익숙한 시형의 노랫말을 양산할 길이 열리면서 18세기에 이르면 노래판의 주류가 될 수 있었다. 두 번째, 19세기 초에 시조창의 전신인 <시절가>가 유행하면서, 기왕 확립된 가곡의 노랫말을 폭넓게 차용함으로써 가곡과 노랫말을 폭넓게 공유하게 되었으리라는 것이다. 부수적으로, ‘요즘 노래’인 ‘시조’가 18세기에는 가곡을 가리켰을 개연성에 주목하여 이른바 ‘시조창의 이세춘 기원설’을 재고할 것을 제언하였다.
How Gagok and Sijo Shared Lyrics －Two Hypothetical Explications－
It is well-known that gagok and sijo, two major Korean lyric song genres, broadly share their lyrics. Historically, however, the two have been separate musical genres with separate musical as well as lyric forms. The essay is an hypothetical explication of how the two genres came to share their lyrics, based on the extant, if few, musical notations from around 1600. Firstly, there happened a remarkable condensation of music and expansion of number of syllables in the third verse of Jungdaeyeop, one of the forebears of the current gagok, thereby making its lyric form identical to that of sijo. The essay tentatively calls this phenomenon “partial condensation.” As a consequence, gagok singers could afford to newly create a number of lyrics themselves, which made the genre the “current song (also sijo)” in the eighteenth century. Secondly, after sijeolga songs, the direct ancestor of sijo, became popular in the early-nineteenth century, its amateur singers preferred just borrowing the lyrics from gagok to creating their own. That is why the two genres came to share a number of lyrics nowadays. Incidently, since the term ‘sijo (current song)’ might have referred to gagok, not sijo songs, in the eighteenth century, the essay proposes that the presumed invention of sijo tune by Yi Sechun be reconsidered.
